One Room Challenge: Week Six, Master Bedroom Complete

Today is the day reveal day for the One Room Challenge, six weeks ago I started the journey of redesigning my master bedroom. Words can hardly express how much I love how my bedroom came together, I’m in love. Like hardcore in love with my new bedroom and I say new because it honestly feels like a brand new space. I’m so grateful for my amazing design collaboration partners: Scandinavian Designs, Lumens Light & Living, Zeal Living and HANdiy Paint Products.

Another huge thank you goes to Linda from Callin It Home for organizing the One Room Challenge and emailing weekly nuggets of encouraging wisdom all the participants every week and to the media partner Better Homes & Gardens. I love how the ORC isn’t a design competition, its all about celebrating creativity, cheering everyone on as they complete a small or big makeover on a quick timeline. One thing I learned about myself is I thrive on deadlines, no deadline gives me no reason to complete a project.

This is exactly why my master bedroom looked a hot mess for six consecutive years (and the fact I would never execute a design plan I created because deep down I wasn't feeling it) and in six consecutive weeks along with the help of my husband and our oldest son we knocked this project out!

And a little introduction about me if you're new around here, welcome! My name is Katrina, and I live in Sacramento, California, with my husband, two kids, and our dog Oliver in a small 1950’s rancher. Basically, I’m living a Full Life in a Small Home. I’m a lover of small old homes, old homes make my heart happy, and I love all the built-in charm. My style is what I call California Modern Casual, a mix of clean, modern lines, relaxed vibes, nothing too fussy. On my blog, I share design ideas to help you maximize your spaces along with DIY Projects and a mix of lifestyle content.

It’s crazy how fast the last six weeks have flown by. When talking about how I wanted my bedroom to feel six weeks ago I wrote:

“The time has finally come to give my bedroom love and purpose. I want to create a relaxing bedroom for my husband and me to enjoy. Basically, I want a bedroom so relaxing you want to hang out all day in on Sundays”

I think I nailed it. I nailed the vibe I wanted my bedroom to have and feel! In fact, on Sunday after I shot pictures of my bedroom reveal, I chilled so hard in my bedroom in the new seating area of my bedroom and floor. The bed was made to perfection and I just coundn’t mess it up!

Before I share all the reveal photos, lets quickly look back on how my bedroom used to look. My master bedroom used to feel so unbalanced and everything was pushed towards the window. Our old bed frame and headboard were just too high for my 8ft ceilings and nightstands were just borrowed from my living room. Our dresser was at the foot of the bed and our old ‘heavy’ feeling TV was too high on our wall. Our bedroom has a niche area where our closet used to reside, I thought it would be a brilliant idea to add shelves. IT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE! What was I thinking!

I worked on my bedroom on nights and weekends, staying up late to knock off my to-do list. For such a small space my to-do list felt never-ending. I’ve been wanting to add crown-molding in our bedroom for years and Hasani and I DIYed and I gotta say it turned out amazing! It’s amazing how crown molding can help elongate a room and make it feel more substantial

I’m excited to share my bedroom, I love everything. Best of all it feels like my husband and myself a great mixture of feminine + masculine. One thing that didn’t arrive on time was our new bedroom lamps, OMG the lamps I ordered are so so good, matte black sexy, its the extra oomph that my room needs. Thankfully my old blue Ralph Lauren lamps shine in my bedroom and are a great placeholder until the new ones arrive. I’ll share bedroom updates when they arrive. As I mentioned in Week One of ORC, I decided to finish off the design in my bathroom will share those updates next week!

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK SIX // MASTER BEDROOM RETREAT IS COMPLETE

I love how everything has come together over the past few weeks. I can’t get over how much I love my bedroom, especially the bed! Our bed is the Tambur Bed in queen from Scandinavian Designs and its so luxe, its a fully upholstered quality bed, with wood legs that give it an upgraded look. Our side tables are perfection, I love their mid-century vibe. I opted to mix up our side tables, to fit mine and Hasani’s personal needs, his side table is the Holfred Nightstand, with two velvet lined drawers and shelf perfect for books. I also love brass-capped feet on the legs of the nightstand. On my side of the bed, I opted for the Holfred Side Table, which has a nice deep shelf and brass-capped feet.

Since the moment we moved back into our home, I’ve been wanting a chair in our bedroom. I always thought a chair would go in our niche area were our closet once was, BUT once I saw the Eilert Chair, I knew it was the chair that would be perfect for a corner in my bedroom. Honestly, I love this chair so so much which is surprises because I never thought I’d have leather furniture in my bedroom. The lines of this chair are so good, plus it’s incredibly comfortable. The slight wing detail and stitching detail slay me.

On the chair, I added a white and grey stripe Hand-Woven Morrocan blanket from Zeal Living, an online boutique offering fair-trade wares from Africa. The navy pillow is from Scandinavian Designs, available in-store. I love the hardware zipper detail on the pillow. Details always make my heart happy. The Gold Martini Side Table is from West Elm and is so perfect for the corner of our bedroom.

Our dresser now resides in the niche in our bedroom. I gave the dresser a fresh coat of Cloud White paint from Behr and updated the hardware with vintage-inspired gold hardware. The lines of the pulls and tapered knobs look so perfect on our vintage dresser. I bought the dresser years ago on Craigslist for around $50 bucks. We installed a new slim TV above our dresser, and it looks so good. Hasani initially was hesitant to have our dresser and tv in the niche thinking TV watching would be hard. Once the dresser was moved he loved its new placement. I swear our niche was made for our dresser.

The area in between our closet and bathroom now has a purpose. I added a small woven stool outside our bathroom door, the Raholt Stool is from Scandinavian Designs and fits perfectly in this space. I love that we can sit on the bench and out shoes on / or take shoes off. It’s also available as a full-size bench.

I still have to touch up paint around the ceiling fixture this weekend, I’ll update pictures when it’s done! The light fixture is from Lumens and looks so good in this area.

I love the retro vibes of our new light fixture above, its also from Lumens. I’m thinking about adding a ceiling medallion to the light, what do you think? Again, I need to touch up paint on the ceilings in here.

“My intention for our bedroom is to be balanced with light and dark, layered in color, cozy, and touchable”

I love how everything came together, I placed a Juju hat that was once in an awkward area of my bedroom above my bed. Hasani wasn’t feeling it and thought would look to girly. I knew our bedroom needed that extra pop and I love the history and beauty of them, read more about the History of Juju Hats. Once I placed the hat above my bed frame, I was in awe and Hasani loved it! Win-Win! I asked him a few days ago how he felt about of bedroom and he says it feels like an entirely new room and loves it. Similar Juju Hat found here.
