Modern Ideas for Displaying Family Photos

I love family photos and seeing the story of a family, however I'm not a fan of displaying family photos in a 1980's way. You know what I mean, family photos covering every single wall in the house a dated frames. Don't get my wrong I love the 80's, I'm a 1980's baby, but displaying family photos in a dated way, can make your entire space feel date. I rounded up a few modern I ideas for displaying family photos in a meaningful way that won't look & feel dated, Including a few ways I've display family photos in my home.

Photo Ledges

A fantastic and simple way to display family photos is by using a photo ledge. I love photo ledges, they're a great way to use varying height frames, and you can easily layer photos on top of each other. They key to keeping photo ledges looking effortless, is choosing similar style frames. Photo ledges can be placed in entryways, above sofas or in hallways. Before our home was re-built in 2013, in our living entryway I DIYed photo ledges similar to ones I had seen and Pottery Barn and hung three ledges that displayed our engagement & wedding photos.

Family Photo Grid

A grid of family photos, can be the perfect solution for filling up a large wall in a meaningful way. While I love color photos, Black and White family photos always look timeless and elegant a in a group. I wanted to add family photos in my house, that felt like artwork and would make me smile whenever I walked into a room. In my dining room, I hung a grid of Black & White family photos using white six. I loved how the family photo grid out, each photo feels like a time capsule. I also love how easy it is to change the photos, if I choose to down the line. Here's a trick I learned a while back on How to Fix a Crooked Hanging Frame (sanity saver!)

In the Mudroom

A perfect spot for family photos, is hanging them in a mudroom. Such a sweet way to say hello & goodbye everyday. I love how sweet and layered the family photos look about the builtin mudroom unit.

Modern Look for the Hallway & Staircase

One of the most popular ways for showcasing family photos in the hallway, but if you now careful it can look so dated a cheesy. Save the cute kid school pictures for photo albums, or consider making a few of them Black & White, like the class school picture. Go floor to ceiling, but only if you don't have little hands in your home or animals that may bump into them!

I love the hallway below, there never seems to be enough lighting in hallways, a fantastic idea is using cordless art lights in hallway to hang above family photos.

How do you display family photos in your home?

Small Home Style: Small Bathroom Design Solutions

Welcome to my 3rd post about Small Home Style, sharing stylish ideas to incorporate into your home. As a small home dweller living in 1100 Sq feet with a family of four + a puppy, I've learned to design my home with intention and make sure our small home works of my family. Every Monday, I'm sharing design solutions for small homes, helping to tackle small home design dilemmas. Today, I'm sharing design solutions for small bathrooms. Chances are when you have a small home you also have a small bathroom. It can be challenging to create extra storage and make the most of your space with your bathroom is small. However, there are several ways you can make your bathroom feel larger & organized.

Add a Linen Closet

If you have room inside your bathroom or right outside, add a freestanding linen closet to help double your space. Store bathroom towels and misc bathroom items on the shelves.

Add Shelves

Shelves help create instant storage options, choose shelves wide enough that they can hold artwork, baskets, towels, soaps and misc bathroom items. Consider hanging three, above your toilet, odd number of shelves always looks best.

Take the Doors Off

If you have a linen closet inside your bathroom, consider removing the doors! Too many doors inside your bathroom can make a small space feel crowded. Style the opening shelves using trays to hold perfumes and lotions, use baskets to hold bath towels & curling irons etc.

Use All Surfaces for Extra Surface

Place a tray on top of your toilet to create a curated extra storage solution. The tray can hold artwork, photos, bathroom products, candles and jars.  This is great way to stylish sneak in extra storage.

Another option is adding a small tray on top of your vanity to coral: toothbushes, candles, purfume etc. items stylishly in plain site

Hang it High

In my sons bathroom, that also serves as our guest bathroom. I hung our striped navy and white shower curtain extra tall, to help create the illusion of tall ceilings, which draw your eyes up and out.

Think Outside the Box

Use a children's wall mounted book holder to organize your beauty products in your bathroom in a chic way. I just adore the dreamy way the a book holder was used in the bathroom below.

Add a small shelf under your mirror for holding perfumes & lotions. Also add an additional mirror to make your morning routine a breeze.

Use Baskets for Purpose & Texture

In my master bathroom below, I two used large baskets underneath our vanity to holder bathroom essentials: toilet paper and towels. This allowed our storage to double and helped create a small linen closet feeling in our petite bathroom. Plus the baskets add texture and color to a white bathroom.

Organize Cabinets & Drawers

Make the most of your vanity cabinets and get those drawers and bottom cabinet organized. Use a lazy Susan as a landing spot for bath products and baskets to hold your kids bathroom toys.
