Hallway Paint Refresh

My small hallway in my home has been in need of a paint refresh. It’s one of the most traveled spaces in my home, and it's taking a beating: nail holes, handprints, and pencil marks! Over the weekend, I gave my small hallway a paint makeover, and I love how it turned it!

KILZ Premium 3 Interior and Exterior Primer

KILZ Premium 3 Interior and Exterior Primer

When tackling spaces for paint, prep is always super important! I always use primer regardless of the project I’m tackling, from painting cabinets, furniture to painting a room. I’ve been using KILZ® Primer for years, ensuring that my painting projects have a professional finish.

Before heading to my local Ace hardware store to pick up the KILZ primer and paint for my project, I visited the KILZ website to help me determine which primer to use. For my hallway project, I wanted to hide stains, pencil marks, and old nail holes, and drywall knicks I recently covered up with spackle.

Thanks to the guide on the KILZ website, I determined the best primer for my project was KILZ 3® Premium Primer. It’s perfect for hiding stains, imperfections, and quick-drying!

Five Reasons to Why It’s Important to Use Primer

  • Primer preps your surface for your painting projects

  • Primer helps hide existing stains

  • Priming before painting helps with adhesion, allowing the paint to adhere better to the primer and creating a professional after

Primer also helps when painting on new surfaces such as new drywall and can even hide odors
I used a roller to apply the KILZ 3 Premium primer, its low VOC, and went on fast, I used a brush to cut in on the baseboards, door trim, and ceilings. I love that the primer dries in about an hour, letting me tackle this project in one day.

While visiting my local Ace Hardware to pick up my primer, I also picked up one gallon of paint from the Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® paint line. I’ve been wanting to try this paint for a while and see all the beautiful color options in person, the colors didn’t disappoint! The range of colors is beautiful and sophisticated and I love that Magnolia Home paint is in collaboration with KILZ, ensuring value and durability.

After looking at the color and keeping my medium grey linen cabinet in mind, I decided to paint my hallway Earl Grey, it's a beautiful grey color that’s deeper than the old color and looks better with the current lighting. I should also mention that the color names of the paint all feel special and spot on!

The paint went on nice and smooth, I used a roll and again used my brush to cut in. The paint is pretty and dried the exact color as the swatch! Painting my hallway took about one and a half coats of paint, the additional coat of paint was mostly needed because I used a roller. Because I used KILZ primer for my painting project, the paint was smooth and there was no bleed-through of old stains, pencil marks, and handprints. I’ve learned in my early days of DIY projects not to skip the important step of primer.

I love how my projects turned out and I’m excited to get some artwork or family photos on the wall! For now, I hung up some artwork I had laying around because I just had to! Finally seeing my hallway clean and freshly painted feels so good!

One last DIY Painting Pro tip I’ve learned over the years, after spackling a hole with paint, instead of grabbing your paint for touching up, prime the area you just fixed. Then paint over the spackled, primed area! It makes a huge difference making sure the paint will adhere properly and you won’t see any obvious signs of an old nail hole. I love how this project my hallway painting project turned out, my hallway now feels fresh and open!

How to Organize a Small Laundry Room

One of the things I love most about interior design is viewing space and reimagining it, especially small spaces that have been underutilized. Giving a room a new purpose is the absolute best feeling, I seriously never tire of it. A few years ago we updated our laundry room with a tile subway tile backsplash, added open shelves, wood counter above our washer and dryer, and created a little area for Oliver. Read more about the projects here and here.

Our laundry room is a small hardworking space, it’s about the size of a small bathroom and it has three doors! Working around the three doors is a challenge, but having a small space forces you to get creative. Now that Olive is older and we can trust him in our entire house when were one it freed up a little unused space in my laundry room. Plus as he’s gotten bigger, his bed has too! Its moves to the living room and he sleeps in there at night.

One day while doing laundry, I realized how little we actually used the coat rack, it was basically a never, only a bag and Oliver’s leash hung from the rack. It one of those things where you have buyer’s remorse and feel bad about dropping $100 on a rack realizing it never quite felt right.

Add a Console, to Hold All the Things

What I really needed in this small space was a console, a small console to tuck into the corner and create additional storage! One can never have enough storage space. I felt like gold-locks looking for just the right console table, everything was either too big or provided zero storage beyond the top of the console.

The Pelham console was the perfect console table for the small space, which provides plenty of storage with two shelves to hold all the things!

Pelham Console Table, is the perfect size for small spaces + it offers plenty of storage with the additional shelves

Above the console, I added a large print from Society Six, called Laundry Day is Puglia, and hung a Pink Moth Print above. Don’t forget to add artwork in your laundry room, it helps brighten up space and add a personal touch.

Don’t forget the artwork! This Laundry Day in Puglia artwork is so sweet and dreamy. I love that you have the option to have it framed or the just the print shipped

On the top shelf, I added a few plants, I never miss the chance to add fresh greenery throughout my home. On the shelves, I added baskets to hold my plant care items, Oliver’s dog stuff (leash, pet meds, cleaning supplies), and candles. I also have plenty of room for my vases and miscellaneous stuff. Let me tell you, this console has been such a great opportunity to create storage and look good!

It’s almost like I created a small landing entry nook in our laundry room. I love how one project kicks off more small updates. I painted the main door that leads to our patio, the color is Antiquity by Sherwin Williams, it’s a beautiful chartreuse shade of yellow, with a hint of green undertones depending on the lighting situation. I love how the door color creates an entire vibe and big impact in this small space.

Add a Mix of Wire and Wicker Baskets

Next, I focused my attention on improving the storage on the open shelves above my washer and dryer. I used to have belly baskets on the top shelf holding paper towels. Well, my family is the out of sight out of mind type of family! My son would tell me we were all out of paper towels, but when I checked the baskets there would be paper towels inside.

I solved the issue with metal bins, I love the wood handles making it easier to pull the items off the shelf. The bins are a great price and would also work great in a pantry.

The Perfect Metal Basket for your laundry room or pantry, the wood handled detail kicks up the design a notch. I use this basket to hold paper towels neatly.

The metal basket on the shelf holds cleaning supplies, I kicked off the year on a mission to use ‘cleaner’ cleaning products that are better for my home and better for the environment, more on this topic coming soon! In the wicker baskets, I have one filled with washcloths. The other wicker basket holds extra wool balls and wood floor cleaning pads. I swapped out the old hook for a pretty gold faceted hook, the hook currently holds a large market basket. I’m all about sneak storage solutions, the market basket is filled with reusable plastic bags.

I love how these three simple updates, especially adding the console table have added so much storage and given my laundry room a new look!
