Today kicks off the Summer In Style Outdoor Edition home tours! I’ve invited my blog friends to share their style outdoor spaces: patios, decks, porches and more. Each blogger has an incredible sense style, and their outdoor spaces are inspiring and entirely different which makes this Summer In Style series so exciting. Creating and styling outdoor spaces that are modern, relaxing and livable is my jam!
If you're new to my blog, welcome to Chic Little House! I’m Katrina, I love treasure hunting, interior design and celebrating living small. I share my home 1950’s rancher with my husband, two kids, and our lab puppy. Life threw us a curveball in the Summer of 2012, with a house fire. We spent the next year living in an apartment and rebuilding our home. Along the way, I made some changes to the floor plan transforming 1950’s layout into a modern home for our family. You can read more about our renovation here. I’m a firm believer in creating a home you love that's fully lived-in with intention.
I absolutely love the warm months in Sacramento. For the past three Summers, I have been working our transforming our once little-used backyard patio space into an extension of our home. As a small home dweller, it's important to me; we use all of our spaces indoor and out to their full potential. I would define my outdoor style as a mix of California Casual Modern with a hint of East Coast style. Think relaxed outdoor vibe, a mixture of patterns, weathered gray outdoor furniture and lots of lush greenery. Check out how my patio looked last year.
I’m super excited to share how our patio is shaping up for Summer. Right next to our back patio door, we have a variegated dwarf Pink Lemonade tree. I planted the tree last Spring in a super large modern planter, similar planter here. I’m happy to report; I currently have one lemon growing and a few little lemon buds forming.
A few Summers ago my husband and I DIYed an outdoor BBQ cart that works perfectly near the back patio door. Having an outdoor cart is essential! Our cart is perfect for drink making and holding outdoor essentials: dinnerware, glasses, and bowls. To create the feeling of an outdoor bar, I used a tray to hold beverages. Check out details for building your own cart here
Last Summer, we finally added lounge furniture to our patio. I’m a huge fan of modern, clean lines, especially in furniture. Instead of an all matching set, I opted to mix it up. I paired a modern weather grey sofa and coffee table with a pair of modern wicker chairs. We added an outdoor rug this year to help define our lounge area on the patio and make it shoe free! I love walking barefoot around my patio. The rug also helps create the feeling of an outdoor room which I dig. We have a pergola over our patio, that can make the layout a little tricky due to the columns, I setup our lounge furniture conversation style, with the sofa anchoring and the chairs facing each other.
Summer in Sacramento can be hot, like scorching. In evenings we often get the Delta breeze which can make Summer nights chilly; I found this outdoor weatherproof basket at Home Goods it's perfect for holding blankets and pillows. I love how it tucks perfectly under our coffee table.
This Summer, I added a few outdoor pillows on my sofa, and I’m obsessed. The blue pillows are indigo mud cloth inspired but made with durable outdoor fabric. Pottery Barn no longer carries the pillows, but here’s a similar version. I found the tropical and grey pillow covers from Etsy, love them! The pillows add so much color and up the cozy vibe of my patio.
Hands down my favorite element on my patio are my plants! I’m all about the more, the merrier when it comes to plants on my patio + it adds so much color and life. When it comes to decorating outdoors, I treat my plants as furniture and accessories and use a vast array of various style modern planters.

I love having a lot of plants on my patio, helps my patio feel garden-like and so peaceful. My family and I love spending our mornings and evenings outside just chilling. It feels so good seeing our outdoor space come together; it's years in the making. Next week on the blog, I’m sharing my full patio and the remaining plans I have for our patio this Summer.
Thank you for joining me for the Summer In Style Outdoor Edition, I hope you enjoyed the tour of my patio garden. Up next on the blog hop tour is the lovely Julia of Cuckoo 4 Design. I adore Julia’s design aesthetic and her tropical inspired front porch is dreamy; her style is always on point.
