As a small home dweller, I’ve been on a mission this year to really improve the functionality and overall storage in our home. There are a few areas in my home both design-wise and storage that were seriously lacking and basically big eyesores. HOME ORGANIZATION SERVICES: CONSULTATION
The first step in the process is scheduling your free design consultation, the Design Consultant came to my home and I showed her the three areas in my home that needed some serious help. The three areas in my home that I wanted to tackle for this project were my son's small reach-in closet, our hallway linen cabinet, and adding a built-in banquette to our small eat-in kitchen.
My local Sacramento Design Consultant, Carole visited my home to measure each area and then we sat down and walked through design options for the closet, linen cabinet and seating. During the meeting I was able to look at cabinet finishes, drawer front styles, hardware and interior closet musts. It was so much fun to share my vision for each space and watch the Design Consultant help bring my ideas to life and share all her expertise. I’m breaking down each project individually, to easily share the before, during and amazing after.
LINEN CABINET // BEFORE, PROCESS, AND AFTER
I really love my spaces to work hard for me while looking good, our small linen closet is one of those areas in our home that’s been a constant eyesore and never really worked. When I say my linen closet is small, I’m not exaggerating; it's roughly 18 inches wide and 26 inches deep. Back in January, we demoed our linen cabinet, taking out the ill-fitting shelves, here’s the terrible before, so awful right!
After talking through my ideas with the Project Specialist, I knew lower drawers would be a must along with an upper glass door. Carole had the great idea to use the full width and depth of the space, to fully utilize the small space. Here’s how my linen cabinet space looked when the measurements were taken and how space started shaping up.
The building process went really smooth, with the Installation Team custom building my linen cabinet in place and building the drawers on-site.
My small linen cabinet has been truly transformed! While I love white cabinets, I wanted to bring color into my hallway and landed on grey cabinets with a shaker style cabinet with brushed nickel hardware. I just can’t get over how amazing it turned out and all the NEW storage has felt incredible!
The glass door on my linen cabinet it's so beautiful. I'm a firm believer if you can see it, it stays organized! I have so much upper deep storage for blankets, throws, towels and more. It’s exciting to put away towels! Before our linen storage was like one big pit where everything just landed.
The bottom of the linen cabinet has five drawers and they fully open, have a soft-close and are dovetailed. The drawers are deep enough to hold blankets, sheets and miscellaneous bathroom overflow items including: toilet paper, cotton balls, q-tips and more. I’m honestly still getting used to having so much storage!
AVERY’S SMALL REACH-IN CLOSET // BEFORE & AFTER
Avery’s closet before was a tiny hot-mess, jam-packed full of stuff and more stuff. After talking with Carole and discussing the needs of my son’s closet, we quickly decided his closet made the most sense as a grow-with-him closet. It was fun to see the closet design come to life with 3-D Renderings she showed me during our consultation. The plan was to add drawers, two sections of rods for hanging clothes, and shelves to hold clothes, toys, games, and books. Avery’s closet is very narrow reach-with a single door making it tricky to design. Before Avery’s closet makeover, we did a huge purge of clothes, toys, and more that were too small and no longer being played with.
I love how good his closet turned out! His little closet now has so much storage! I never dreamed a closet this small could have so much storage! Basically there’s storage for all the scenarios: hanging storage, drawers, lots of shelves, and place for shoes! The storage was pushed to the max! Now when you open the closet door, there’s a bank of lower drawers and upper open shelves. So many drawers, so much storage opportunities!
On the left of the drawers, there’s shoe storage. I’m so happy there’s a designated spot for his shoes! Instead of leaving them around the house, he now has a spot to keep his shoes. I can’t tell you enough how happy this makes me! We also added a valet rod to his storage to hold his backpack and umbrella. As he gets older, I can picture Avery using the valet rod to hold his outfits for the next day. In addition his closet now has an upper and lower section of hanging clothes. There’s even a spot to hold his small suitcase which is awesome.
As you can see his closet isn’t full and I’m so happy about that! There’s plenty of room for him to grow into his closet! I love that there’s so many cubbies to hold games, toys, blankets and so much more.
DINING ROOM BEFORE AND AFTER BUILT-IN BANQUETTE
I’m so excited to share my dining room! We have a small eat-in-kitchen, that's roughly nine feet wide. In our space having banquette seating makes the most sense, allowing us to seat more people around the table. In our dining room, I had a free-standing bench that comfortably sat 2-3 people and fit well in my space. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a built-in banquette that went from wall-to-wall with pull-out drawers. Working with Carole on this design was so much fun, we worked through the design style, including the depth of the seating for the bench and style of the drawers and height. Here’s how my space looked room looking before with the freestanding banquette.
My dining room was completely cleaned out for the installation day. We moved our dining room table and chairs into our garage.
It felt so strange seeing my dining room empty, but I couldn’t wait for installation day! After finalizing the measurements, Carole determined four large drawers would fit best in the space. I went with white shaker style drawer fronts to match my existing kitchen cabinets and selected brushed nickel for the hardware. It was so exciting watching this project come to life.
I love how beautiful the banquette seating turned out! It’s amazing how much larger, open and brighter my small dining room is now! The drawers are amazing and provide so much storage, they’re dove-tailed doors with a soft-close.
When I walk into my dining room, I’m amazed by how it looks! It’s exactly what I wanted!
Whew, that was a long blog post! I hope you enjoyed seeing how all the projects turned out, it's amazing! I love that all those spaces in my home that used lack storage, style and purpose have been fully transformed, thanks to the help of The Home Depot Home Organization Services. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on how the projects turned out!
Wasn’t my linen cabinet a hot mess, with zero storage and now I have so much storage! Avery’s small reach-in closet is now fully maximized and a great closet he can grow into. I’m so in love with how my banquette seating turned out in my eat-in-kitchen, its incredible and complements my home and style perfectly!
